It’s cleaning time here at the shop again, this time around we have uncovered several cartons of of 1980s era Mesa-Boogie STR-420 tubes. These small-bottle 6L6GCs were provided to a special “friend of Boogie” who was in love with the tonal quality of these tubes when biased extra hot. The label on each tube is marked “Over” as the plate current draw measures slightly higher than Mesa’s warmest “White” rating, however they are still within 6L6GC specs and can be safely installed in a Boogie. While the service life when run hot may be diminished, the tone is one of a kind — give ‘em a try if your Boogie just doesn’t sound the same with current production tubes. All tubes are genuine new old stock and have never been used. They have been retested for shorts, gas and microphonics. Each quad (4 tubes) is matched for plate current (within +/- 2 mA) at up to 500V on custom, proprietary test equipment and is subjected to a final listening test in an actual guitar amplifier.
